That was your demo check, run on the same references the desk uses. The desk adds renal dosing against an estimated clearance, hepatic review, unlimited checks, saved history and your sign-off on every card.
The on-page check covers five prescribing scenarios and never invents clinical output, so it will not produce a card for this pair.
The full Prescriber.io desk checks any regimen against interactions, contraindications, and renal or hepatic dosing, with cited sources for you to verify.

What $94.99 buys
What the HalesMeds subscription includes
The lactational pharmacology reference founded by Thomas W. Hale, now edited by the InfantRisk Center's director.
Lactation Risk Categories
Every entry carries the L1 to L5 category that most lactation clinicians already speak in, from safest to contraindicated.
1,300 plus entries
Drugs, vaccines, diseases and syndromes, searchable by name or by drug category when you need a safer alternative in the same class.
Infant monitoring and pediatric concerns
What to watch for in the baby, reported infant effects and the adult dosing context, inside each monograph.
Transfer data with references
Relative infant dose, milk to plasma ratio, half-life and oral bioavailability where studied, with the papers behind them.
Updates through the year
The online edition is revised several times a year. The book only changes every other year.
Print and share
Entries can be printed or shared with a patient or colleague, which helps when you are explaining why a drug is compatible.
HalesMeds billing and cancellation
When you are charged, and how to stop
Before you pay
Create a free account on halesmeds.com or download the app. Full entries stay locked until you subscribe.
Day 1
Pay $94.99 for the year or $9.99 for the month, on the web or in the app. One subscription covers both.
Each renewal
The plan renews at the same price until you cancel. Recurring billing is the only way it is sold.
To stop
Cancel anytime. App Store purchases must be turned off in your Apple ID at least 24 hours before the period ends.
Unlike some book-style apps, Hale's online does not keep working after you stop paying. It is a subscription to current content, so access ends with the period you paid for.
Why you will see $7.99, $84.99 and $59.99 quoted for Hale's
Search for the HalesMeds price and three sets of numbers come back. Springer's own pricing page headlines the yearly plan as "$7.99 per month", which is the $94.99 annual charge divided by twelve, not a monthly plan. The App Store description text still lists $7.99 a month and $84.99 a year, while the in-app purchase list on the same listing, which is what Apple actually charges, shows $9.99 and $94.99. App tracking sites that copied the listing years ago still show $5.99 and $59.99.
So the honest budget is $94.99 a year paid up front, or $9.99 a month if you want to stay flexible. Twelve months on the monthly plan cost $119.88, about $25 more than the yearly plan.
Online subscription or the 2027-2028 book
The 22nd edition, Hale's Medications and Mothers' Milk 2027-2028, came out on September 17, 2026. It is 758 pages, led by Kaytlin Krutsch of the InfantRisk Center, and sells from $90 on Springer Publishing's site, up from $85 for the 2025-2026 edition. Springer updates the book every other year and the online edition several times a year.
That gap matters for newer drugs. GLP-1 agonists, new migraine biologics and recently approved antidepressants are exactly the questions a breastfeeding patient brings in, and they are where a two-year-old book has least to say. Over two years the book costs $90 and the online plan about $190, so the extra $100 buys current entries, phone access and search by drug class. For a prescriber who answers lactation questions every week, that is the better buy. For a library or a teaching program, the book still earns its shelf space.

Where Hale's clearly wins: breastfeeding depth. The L1 to L5 Lactation Risk Category, transfer data with references, infant monitoring advice and alternatives in the same class are all in one entry, and that is why lactation consultants and pediatric practices treat it as the standard. LactMed is free and peer reviewed, but it leaves the risk call to you.
Where it is not the cheapest answer: a quick yes or no. InfantRisk HCP at $14.99 a year rates pregnancy and breastfeeding safety from 1 to 5 across a far larger drug list, and the Briggs app at $79.99 a year is the better buy if most of your questions are about pregnancy. Our best breastfeeding medication app guide compares all of them by role, and the best drug reference app guide covers the general references.
Who should pay for Hale's, and what a prescriber still needs
The buyers who get the most from it are the ones who field breastfeeding medication questions every week: pediatricians, OB-GYNs, family physicians and nurse practitioners with a postpartum panel, midwives, pharmacists on a women's health or NICU service, and IBCLCs who counsel mothers and coordinate with the prescriber. For them $94.99 a year is cheap next to the time a single unclear answer takes.
What Hale's does not do is look at the mother as a patient. A new prescription for a breastfeeding patient still has to clear her other medications, her kidney and liver function, her allergies and her conditions, the same as for anyone else. Postpartum patients are often on several new drugs at once: an antihypertensive, an anticoagulant after a cesarean, an SSRI, an NSAID for pain.
That patient-specific step is what Prescriber.io does. Enter the medication list and the patient's context, including that she is breastfeeding or pregnant, and one card comes back with interactions, contraindications, renal and hepatic dose adjustments and guideline-based alternatives, each with a cited source. You review it and sign. It costs $24 a month per clinician billed yearly, and it does not replace Hale's, which is why prescribers who treat breastfeeding patients often keep both.
Straight answers
Questions people search about Hale's pricing
How much is Hale's Medications and Mothers' Milk online?
Hale's Medications and Mothers' Milk online costs $94.99 a year or $9.99 a month on halesmeds.com, and the same two prices appear in the App Store purchase list. Springer advertises the yearly plan as $7.99 a month, which is $94.99 divided by twelve. One subscription covers the website and the iPhone, iPad and Android apps.
Is the HalesMeds app free?
The download is free, but full drug entries need a subscription. In the app you choose a one-month plan at $9.99 or a twelve-month plan at $94.99, both auto-renewing. The App Store description still lists older prices of $7.99 and $84.99; the in-app purchase list, which is what Apple charges, shows $9.99 and $94.99.
How do I cancel my Hale's subscription?
If you subscribed in the App Store, turn off auto-renew in your Apple ID subscriptions at least 24 hours before the period ends. If you subscribed on halesmeds.com, cancel from your account there; Springer sells it as recurring billing that you can cancel anytime. Access runs to the end of the period you already paid for.
Is Hale's online better than the book?
For clinical use, yes. The online edition is updated several times a year, while the book changes every other year, and lactation data on newer drugs moves fast. The 2027-2028 book at $90 makes sense for a library, a teaching program or anyone who wants a fixed reference to annotate. Most prescribers are better served by the $94.99 yearly plan.
What is the newest edition of Hale's Medications and Mothers' Milk?
The newest edition is Hale's Medications and Mothers' Milk 2027-2028, the 22nd edition, led by Kaytlin Krutsch, director of the InfantRisk Center, and released on September 17, 2026. It runs to 758 pages and sells from $90 on Springer Publishing's site. The previous 2025-2026 edition sold for $85.
Is there a group or institutional price for Hale's?
Yes, but it is quoted, not published. Springer offers Small Practice accounts for group practices and lactation consultancies, and Institution accounts for hospitals, pharmacies, libraries, universities, state agencies and the military. Springer's own blog has quoted multi-user subscriptions from $550. A practice with three or more prescribers should ask before buying individual seats.
Is Hale's worth it compared with LactMed?
If breastfeeding questions are a regular part of your week, yes. LactMed is free and peer reviewed but gives summaries without a risk category, so you make the call from the studies yourself. Hale's adds the L1 to L5 Lactation Risk Category, alternatives and infant monitoring advice in one entry, which saves time on every question for $94.99 a year.
Does Hale's check drug interactions or kidney dosing for the mother?
No. Hale's answers one question well, how a drug reaches the infant through milk. It does not screen the new prescription against the mother's other medications, her eGFR, liver function, allergies and conditions. That patient-specific check is a separate tool, and Prescriber.io runs it in one pass for $24 a month per clinician billed yearly.
