The UpToDate discounts Wolters Kluwer actually honors run through US medical societies: 20% for AAPA members (plus 5% through October 31, 2026), 15% for AAFP, ASCO and ACAAI members, 20% for residents and 50% for students. Here is every rate, how the member store works, what the coupon codes are worth, and the NP and PA route.

In short

The reliable UpToDate discount is a medical society member rate, not a coupon code. AAPA members save 20% on a personal UpToDate or Pro Plus subscription, plus an extra 5% through October 31, 2026. AAFP, ASCO and ACAAI members save 15% as professionals and 20% as residents, and student members of all four save 50%. AANP members get a member rate shown after login. Discounts apply to annual or longer personal subscriptions, the member price expires 30 minutes after you enter the store, and trainee rates earn no CME.

If you searched for an UpToDate promo code, you have probably already seen the coupon sites: pages promising 25%, 40%, even 75% off, with codes nobody has tested in months. We read them, and then we read the only discount pages that Wolters Kluwer actually honors, the member offers run through US medical societies. Those are the reliable way to pay less for a personal subscription, and for most physicians, NPs and PAs they are worth 15% to 20%, and 50% for students.

Below is every society rate we could confirm on the society's own page in October 2026, how the member store works, what the coupon codes are worth, and which route makes sense for your role.

Every one of these applies only to annual or longer personal subscriptions, so a monthly plan gets nothing. The percentage is taken off whichever plan you choose, standard UpToDate or UpToDate Pro Plus, which is the upper tier with Expert AI, the Kidney Dosing tool and offline MobileComplete. Wolters Kluwer does not publish the list price for either plan on a public page; the store shows it after you pick a country and a role. Our UpToDate subscription cost page walks through that store flow.

Is there an UpToDate promo code that works?

One that you can verify: AAPA's. Through October 31, 2026, AAPA members get an extra 5% on top of the 20% member rate on a personal subscription, and the code appears only after you sign in to the AAPA site. Every other code we found was posted on a coupon aggregator with no source, no expiry date we could check and, in several cases, a discount that does not match anything Wolters Kluwer offers.

Typical examples on those pages are a 10% code, a "trainee" dollar-off code, a 40% military code and a group code worth 5% for two or more users. We did not test them, because testing means starting a paid order, and we will not tell you a code works when we have not seen it work. If you want to try one, do it last: open the store through your society first, note the member price, then see whether the coupon field beats it. Codes generally do not stack on top of society pricing.

How the society member store works

The mechanics are the same at every society. You sign in to the society's website, open its UpToDate page and click through to a special storefront where the member price is already applied. Three rules catch people out:

  • The member price lasts 30 minutes. AAPA, AAFP, ASCO and ACAAI all say the storefront reverts to regular prices if you do not finish the order within 30 minutes. Click through only when you have your card and license details ready.
  • Students and residents must prove status. Trainee pricing needs proof of enrollment or training, and the store checks it.
  • Trainee rates earn no CME. Every society page repeats it: CME, CE and CPD credit is not available on subscriptions bought at a trainee rate. AANP adds that its CE credit applies to professional subscriptions only.

That last point changes the math for anyone who wants UpToDate partly for credit. A resident saving 20% gets no credit for the hours spent reading. An attending saving 15% keeps full CME, which our UpToDate CME credits guide values against other ways of buying Category 1 credit.

Does joining a society just for the discount pay off?

Usually not on its own, and you should be suspicious of any page that says otherwise without showing the dues. Society dues run into the hundreds of dollars a year for practicing clinicians, while a 15% to 20% discount on one personal subscription is worth far less than that. Join for the journal, the CME, the advocacy or the job board, and treat the UpToDate discount as a bonus.

The exception is students. A 50% student discount is large, and student membership in most of these societies is cheap. If you are a PA or NP student, or a medical student whose school does not already provide UpToDate, compare the student dues with half the subscription before you pay full price. Check first whether your school or rotation site gives you institutional access, because many US medical schools do.

UpToDate for nurse practitioners and PAs

NPs and PAs are the buyers who gain most from the society route, because they are more likely than physicians to pay for UpToDate themselves when a practice does not provide it.

For nurse practitioners, AANP offers member savings on UpToDate, DynaMed and VisualDx and shows the rate after you sign in. The part worth more than the discount is the CE: AANP says NPs can claim 1.0 contact hour of AANP-accredited CE for each hour of use, tracked automatically, on professional subscriptions. If your certification renewal needs contact hours, that is credit you would otherwise buy separately.

For PAs, AAPA has the clearest public offer of any society: 20% off for professional members, 50% for students, and the extra 5% through October 31, 2026. AAPA's page also lists what a personal subscription includes in 2026, among them Expert AI on Pro Plus and the Lexidrug drug reference built in.

If you are paying personally and price is the main concern, also price the alternatives. Our guide to whether a personal UpToDate subscription is worth it covers the cheaper references NPs and PAs use instead, and Epocrates vs UpToDate compares UpToDate against the $179.99 a year drug reference many prescribers already carry.

Other ways to pay less for UpToDate

  • Use your employer's access first. Hospitals and large groups license UpToDate for staff. If yours does, a personal subscription may only add the mobile app and CME on your own account, which the institutional license may already cover. Ask your medical library.
  • Use your CME allowance. Many employers reimburse a personal UpToDate subscription from a CME or education budget. Keep the store invoice, and if your receipts are scattered across inboxes, a tool that can pull subscription receipts out of your inbox into a spreadsheet saves the hunt when the reimbursement form is due.
  • Buy a longer term. Society discounts apply to annual or longer subscriptions, and the store offers multi-year terms. If you are sure you will keep it, a longer term avoids paying a higher renewal price later.
  • Ask about group pricing. Practices buying for several clinicians go through UpToDate's group or enterprise channel, which is quoted rather than listed.

When a discount still does not make UpToDate the right buy

A discounted UpToDate subscription is still one of the most expensive references a single clinician can buy. If what you mostly look up is whether a new prescription is safe for a specific patient, that is a narrower job. Prescriber.io takes the full medication list, renal and liver function and allergies, checks the drug you plan to prescribe against all of it, and returns interactions, contraindications and renal and hepatic dose adjustments with cited sources, for $24 to $37 per clinician a month billed annually. You review every flag and sign. It does not replace a textbook-depth reference for the clinical question, and many clinicians keep both.

Whichever you buy, start at your society's page, not a coupon site. It is the one discount Wolters Kluwer has put in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a promo code for UpToDate?

The only one we could verify is AAPA's: an extra 5% on top of the 20% member rate, valid through October 31, 2026 and shown after AAPA login. Codes on coupon sites carry no source or expiry date. Open the store through your society first, note the member price, then test any coupon against it.

How do I get a discount on UpToDate?

Sign in to a medical society that partners with Wolters Kluwer, open its UpToDate page and click through to the member store, where the discount is already applied. AAPA gives 20%, AAFP, ASCO and ACAAI give 15% to professionals and 20% to residents, and students get 50%. Finish the order within 30 minutes.

Does AANP give a discount on UpToDate?

Yes. AANP lists member savings on UpToDate, DynaMed and VisualDx and shows the rate after you sign in. NPs can also claim AANP-accredited CE at 1.0 contact hour per hour of UpToDate use, tracked automatically, but only on professional subscriptions, not trainee rates.

Is there an UpToDate student discount?

Yes. Student members of AAPA, AAFP, ASCO and ACAAI save 50% on an annual or longer personal subscription, with proof of student status. Many US medical schools also provide UpToDate through the school, so check institutional access before you pay. Trainee-rate subscriptions do not earn CME.

Do UpToDate society discounts apply to Pro Plus?

Yes. AAPA, AAFP and ACAAI state that the member discount applies to annual or longer personal UpToDate or UpToDate Pro Plus subscriptions. The percentage comes off whichever plan you pick, so Pro Plus members save the same 15% to 20% as standard subscribers.

Can I use an UpToDate discount on a monthly plan?

No. Every society offer we read applies only to annual or longer personal subscriptions. If you want the discount, buy at least a year. Multi-year terms are offered in the store and also qualify for the member rate.
